About
I’m Ben Brown, RPSGT. After serving in the U.S. Navy, I started as a sleep tech in 2006 at Marshall Sleep Disorder Center in Boaz, Alabama (thanks for taking a chance on me, Amy) and earned the RPSGT credential in 2008. In 2024 I helped establish Marshall Sleep Medicine Academy, where I serve as Technical Director and Primary Instructor.
I’ve spent a long time teaching new techs the rules of PAP titration: when to raise CPAP, when to switch to bilevel. Learning those rules in a classroom is necessary, but it's not enough. It always felt a bit like describing how an airplane works and then expecting someone to fly it.
The old way we all learned this was on real patients. You titrate at night, you miss something, and you get a note from your manager the next time you work. That is a slow, uneven way to build skill, and the person paying for those mistakes is the patient. I wanted a better way to practice that is safer for patients and more useful for the people teaching and the people learning. That is why I built SimPAP.
I started it for new techs. I think it also helps experienced techs and labs. Scoring QA, in-services, and “how many Optimals did we get?” only go so far, because every tech gets different patients on different nights. SimPAP gives a more controlled way to see how the team actually titrates, compare that to the lab’s benchmark, and offer coaching in real time.
I’m excited to put a better way to practice into more hands, so we get better at the job, and our patients get better studies.
